Date Night!

Ah, two of my favorite words. A chance to indulge in a cocktail, escape the madness of toddler-land, and a great way to overeat in some fun restaurants in good ol' NYC...

To inspire you for your next date night, here are my top 5 fave restaurants of the moment:

5. Boulton and Watt: Industrial revolution meets comfort food, powered by the pulley system. This place is a perfect after work meet up for a date or with friends, start with a prohibition-style cocktail and choose 3 jars of mix and match mason jar pickles. Still hungry? Fish and chips or the sloppy and satisfying burger are served with thick duck fat fries and homemade ketchup. If you have any room left, the cast-iron chocolate cookie (served warm and feeds 2) is washed down with an ice cold pitcher of milk. Can you say food coma??
4. Peels: Ah, Peels. Kid friendly, full bakery and a brunch/lunch menu beyond dinner? I could eat here three times a day. Perfected cocktails like the Sazerac are listed with a fun and potent Peels Punch, along with fun sharing dishes like cheese curds and the famous "Biscuit Bites" served with pimento cheese and jalepeno jelly. Can't go wrong with any main dish- but save room for dessert! If you are lucky, maybe you will be offered the elusive and ridiculous doughnut bread pudding. Carb overload.
3. Casa Mono- tied with Lupa, also a Mario Batali Restaurant...Can a man in orange crocs really steer you wrong? Casa Mono has excellent Spanish tapas perfect for sharing (think Pumpkin and Goat Cheese Croquetas), and Lupa has swoon-worthy Carbonara that is so creamy and delicious, you will want to reenact the Lady and the Tramp pasta scene with your date and post it on YouTube.
2. Edi and the Wolf: Oh Edi. I have a total school girl crush on Edi, who serves up Austrian comfort food in the unique space meant to look like the deep "anthro-inspired" woods. GREAT first date spot, intimate and special. Best pickled vegetables, amazing brussel sprouts, and get ready- Spaetzle that will make you lick your plate.
1. The Little Owl: This is a special little restaurant, and doubled as the façade of the building where NBC's "Friends" supposedly lived...(amazing rent control!). Worth the wait, this restaurant requires a 30-day in advance reservation, however if you can't wait, they have plenty of early "bird" (haha) tables around 5:30pm. Enjoy a bottle of wine, share the famous gravy meatball sliders and try not to say "MMMM". Many that know me know that I dislike chicken, but The Little Owl's crispy chicken is by far a special dish I would gladly eat again and again. Must try the Mexican Corn as a side. Trust me on this. You won't regret it. Everything about this place is memorable, and the staff is some of the nicest and most unique out there. Cheers!

(Runner up: The Fat Radish: Farm-to-table style dining tucked away near Chinatown...serving up the literal radish (that was delish) upon sitting down. Try the Scotch egg, get your veggies on, and definitely sit at the bar for a lively evening.)

Hungry? Me too...Now, if only I could find a babysitter.... ;)
