Quick Knits: Toddler roll up hat


New to knitting? Scared of circular needles? Try this simple pattern for a child's hat. Start to finish, this hat takes an hour using a chunky yarn that knits up quick and produces awesome results.

You will need:
Half skein of chunky yarn (malabrigo rasta shown here) plus scrap yarn for pom pom
US size 17 knitting needles
Plastic yarn needle to sew seam

1. Cast on 31 stitches.
2. Knit.
3. Purl.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until work measures 5 1/2 inches.
5. Knit 4, Knit 2 together- 5 times, then knit 1 to end row. (Count 26 stitches)
6. Purl 1, Purl 2 together, purl 3- 5 times, then end the row with knit 1.(21 stitches)
7. Knit 2, Knit 2 together- 5 times, then end row with knit 1. (16 stitches)
8. Purl 1, Purl 2 together, purl 1- 5 times. (11 stitches)
9. Knit 2 together- 5 times, then end with knit 1. (6 stitches)
10. Cut the yarn, with about 12-15 inches tail, and thread your yarn needle.
11. Pull the needle back through the 6 stitches, and tie a small knot.
12. Turn the work inside out, and sew the seam of the hat.
13. Knot work, and weave ends into knitting.
14. Make a pom pom with any yarn, and sew pom pom into hat.
15. Ensure pom pom is attached well, hide any yarn by weaving into knitting.
